“And the Lord God prepared
a plant and made it come up over Jonah, that it might be shade for his head to deliver
him from his misery. So Jonah was very grateful for
the plant. “
But as morning dawned the next day God prepared
a worm, and it so damaged the plant that it withered
And it happened, when the sun arose, that
God prepared a vehement east wind; and the sun beat on Jonah’s
head, so that he grew faint. Then he wished death
for himself, and said, “It is better for me
to die than to live.” fourth chapter in Jonah's book verses 6-8.
The Lord prepared a plant to deliver Jonah from his misery,
HOWEVER, he prepared the next day a worm and wind to grow faint!!!
So, this story is about
a man who was very tired. He tried to run from God, his heart was weary. He was
expecting what he was sure that it would never happen!
He knew that God is
merciful and He will not accept to ruin Nineveh,
Yet he chose to sit to
see how the city might be ruined.
He waited and waited and
waited and waited for forty days waiting for the distraction of the city (which
he was sure that it won't)
He was passing time by
imagining it burnt and destroyed.
Something strange
happened which made him very happy; a PLANT out of nowhere just grew.
The plant, which God
prepared for him to sit under of it, he was not making the story! God really
cared about him that he sent him a plant.
However, the same God who prepared a plant for Jonah’s comfort prepared a worm to ruin this plant in one night.
One day he was very
happy that God prepared a shade for him, and the next night God removed the
shade.
Jonah’s bitterness
multiplied. Moreover, who multiplied this bitterness?
God himself did it!
Why did He add to Jonah’s bitterness?
To make him feel and
understand the bitterness He is feeling.
Sometimes in our lives, something just happens that increases our happiness and later it fades away.
He prepared both.
In Jonah's story, I believe that the lord shared with Jonah his feelings.
So sometimes, our
experiences with God is for not only our benefit, but also our understandings
for life and for God himself.
How God deals in shaping
us is spectacular.
He is not only caring
for our prosperity, but he cares as well to develop our feelings and our compassion.
He cares to develop the person. Until we are changed to this image.
